Kitchen Taps £250 to £500

This band is where the real choosing starts. Kitchen taps £250 to £500 holds more choice than any other price step here, and it's also where solid brass and a two-mode pull-out spray stop being upgrades and start being the default fit, so what decides your purchase shifts from what you can spend to which finish and function actually suit your kitchen.

What £250 to £500 buys you

Solid brass moves from occasional to common in this band, and it matters because brass is what lets a finish bond to the body properly rather than sit on top of a different metal underneath. Pull-out spouts with a dual spray and stream mode become the standard fit too, not a specced-up extra, so a tap here is far more likely to switch between a full stream for filling a pan and a spray for rinsing than one from the band below ever is. Single-lever control overtakes twin-lever as the more common format as well, tracking the same shift toward taps built to do more at the sink rather than simply deliver water. A brushed or matt finish is easier to find here too, sitting alongside polished chrome rather than being the rarer option it is a band down.

What changes further up

Move into the band above this one and boiling water and three-in-one functions start entering the picture for the first time, alongside finishes that are bonded rather than plated onto the body. None of that makes brass and a dual-spray pull-out the lesser choice: it means the band above is solving a different problem, instant hot water at the tap, not a better mixer, and that problem carries its own running costs and installation questions worth weighing before you commit to it. See what changes in the band above if instant hot water is worth the extra spend to you.

Choosing within this band

If a spray head is the function you care about most, pull-out taps is where most of this band's dual-spray models sit, whatever the finish you end up choosing. Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a tap at this price and one in the band below?

Body material and spout function change the most. Solid brass and a dual-mode pull-out spray are standard in this band, where the one below leans on chrome-plated zinc alloy and a fixed or twin-lever spout instead. The mechanism inside stays a similar category of part either way, so what you're paying for here is the body and the added function, not a sharper valve.

Is solid brass worth paying more for than a zinc-bodied tap?

It depends on how a finish is meant to look years from now. Brass lets a finish bond to the metal itself, so brushed and bonded finishes hold their character rather than gradually wearing through to a different colour underneath, the way plating over zinc eventually can. If you're after a finish that ages well rather than simply the brightest chrome, brass earns its place at this price.

Do taps in this range come with a pull-out spray as standard?

Most do, and with two modes rather than one. A dual-mode pull-out spray, switching between a full stream and a spray pattern, is the standard fit across this band rather than an upgrade you have to seek out, which marks the clearest shift from the band below it, where a fixed spout is still the more common format.

What's the difference between a tap at this price and one in the band above?

Function is the main shift, not material. Boiling water and three-in-one taps start appearing in the band above, alongside finishes bonded rather than plated onto the body, while this band stays focused on a strong mixer with a proper pull-out spray. Brass and a good finish are already standard here, so the step up buys an added function more than a better build.

Does a tap at this price come with a better guarantee than a cheaper one?

Guarantee length depends on the manufacturer and model rather than the price band, so it's worth checking each listing rather than assuming. What reliably changes at this level is the body material and finish quality on offer, brass and brushed or bonded finishes becoming the norm, not the paperwork attached to the purchase.
