Fireclay, and why the firing matters

These sinks are clay fired at high temperature and finished with a hard glaze, and both halves of that process show up in daily use. The firing gives the material its density, which is what makes a ceramic bowl so much quieter than a pressed steel one; sound gets absorbed by the wall rather than bounced around inside it. The glaze gives the surface, and it is genuinely hard, shrugging off the staining that would mark a softer material and keeping its white for decades rather than years.

The trade is weight and edges. A heavy cast pan dropped from height can chip a glazed rim, which a base grid largely prevents, and the sinks themselves are a serious load for whatever supports them. Not every ceramic sink is a Belfast

This is the assumption worth correcting, because it costs people the material they wanted. Are ceramic sinks a good idea?
