What a filter actually changes

British mains water is safe to drink before anything is done to it, so this is a question of taste rather than safety. The chlorine used to keep the supply clean is what most people are noticing when they say their water tastes of the pipes, and a cartridge takes that out along with sediment and the chalky note that hard water leaves behind. Tea and coffee are where the difference shows most clearly, because both are mostly water and neither hides it.

The cartridge is the part that does the work, and it is a consumable. Depending on the model and how hard your water is, it wants changing somewhere between twice a year and once a year, and replacement cartridges for the brands here are stocked separately so the tap never becomes an orphan.

Filter only, or filter and boiling

This is the fork in the road. A filter-only tap gives you filtered cold water alongside your usual hot and cold, and asks for nothing under the sink beyond a compact cartridge housing. A multi-function tap adds boiling water to the same fitting, so hot, cold, filtered and boiling all arrive through one spout and the kettle goes in a cupboard. What the second option costs you is cupboard space, because a boiling tap needs a heated tank under the sink as well as the filter. If that space is already spoken for, a filter-only tap is the cleaner answer. If it is free, boiling water taps are worth reading about before you decide.

Does a tap water filter really work?

Yes, and the difference is usually obvious on the first glass. A cartridge filter reduces chlorine, sediment and the taste of limescale that makes British tap water taste flat. It is not a purifier and it is not treating unsafe water, since UK mains supply is already safe to drink. What it changes is taste, clarity and how the water behaves in tea and coffee.

Are tap water filters worth it?

If you currently buy bottled water or keep refilling a jug, the case makes itself, because filtered water arrives at the tap without a jug taking up fridge space. If you are happy with your water as it comes, a filter tap is a comfort rather than a necessity. The cartridge is an ongoing cost either way, so factor that in.

Is it good to filter tap water for drinking?

Does a filter tap change the water pressure?
