Gold Kitchen Taps

Gold kitchen taps are the boldest metal in this range. Some of that gold sits as a coating over stainless steel, so it wears hard and never loses its shine; more of it, in this collection, is real brass, brushed or antique, warmer to the eye and closer to the traditional gold fittings British kitchens have used for generations. Choose the one that matches how much warmth you want in the room, not just how much shine.

Brass or PVD gold

Two different things get called gold on a kitchen tap, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying. PVD gold is a hard coating laid over stainless steel underneath, so it resists scratching and holds its colour without the upkeep a plated finish usually asks for, a fit for a kitchen that wants durability without a second thought. Brushed brass and antique brass are the traditional route: real brass, worked to a soft directional grain or an aged, deliberately uneven tone, warmer than any coated finish can quite manage and closer to the fittings a period kitchen would have used originally. Neither is the better metal; one is chosen for how little it asks of you, the other for how much character it starts with.

Which kitchens suit gold, and how it compares

Gold works hardest in a kitchen that already leans warm: oak or walnut cabinetry, cream or terracotta walls, brass door furniture elsewhere in the house. Next to chrome, gold reads as the warmer, brighter finish, chrome stays cooler and more neutral, so a kitchen built around grey or white can make gold look like the odd choice rather than the deliberate one. Nickel sits between the two: still warm, but muted rather than bright, the option if you want that warmth without gold's fuller shine. Black-and-gold two-tone taps, pairing a black body with gold levers, give you both finishes in one fitting, and black is worth a look if you want that contrast built in from the start.

Living with gold

Care depends on which gold you have bought. A PVD coating over steel shrugs off most kitchen use without much thought: warm water and a soft cloth handle nearly everything, and there is no plating underneath to wear through. Brass wants a touch more attention, especially in a brushed or antique finish, since anything abrasive or heavily acidic dulls the tone faster than it would a coated surface, so a soft cloth and a mild washing-up liquid are the safer habit either way. Buyers who have had one fitted tend to talk about the build as much as the colour. As Sarah J.F. put it: "The build of the hand spray is of very high quality with zero plastic parts and a long reach hose for filling a bucket or bowl on the floor."

Gold is a bigger commitment than a neutral finish, so it is worth seeing the kitchen taps range in full before you settle on it, alongside how it sits against your own sink and worktop.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between gold and brass kitchen taps?

Not much, most of the time. On many kitchen taps "gold" describes brushed or antique brass finished to a warm tone, the same alloy that has given British kitchens their gold fittings for generations. The other kind of gold you will find is a PVD coating laid over stainless steel, harder wearing and more consistent, but without brass's warmth or its slight variation piece to piece.

Is PVD gold more durable than brushed brass?

For everyday wear, yes. PVD gold is a hard coating bonded to steel, so it resists scratching and holds its colour with very little upkeep. Brushed and antique brass are real metal rather than a coating, which gives them a warmth PVD cannot quite match, but they ask for a gentler cleaning routine to keep that tone even over the years.

Are gold kitchen taps a good idea for a busy kitchen?

Yes, provided you match the finish to how you clean. A PVD gold tap shrugs off daily use with barely a thought, so it suits a kitchen that gets heavy traffic and little time for upkeep. Brushed or antique brass rewards a gentler hand, mild cleaners and a soft cloth rather than anything abrasive, so it fits a kitchen where the odd extra minute of care is not a burden.

Will a gold tap match my sink?

It does not need to match exactly to work. Gold sits well against a stainless steel sink, where the contrast reads as deliberate rather than mismatched, and it pairs just as naturally with a composite sink in a warm tone. Pale ceramic sinks give gold the most contrast of all, letting the tap stand out as the room's focal point rather than blending in.

What is the difference between brushed and polished gold?

Brushed carries a fine directional grain that scatters light, so fingerprints and water spots barely register between cleans. Polished is buffed to a brighter, more reflective shine, closer to the mirror finish chrome is known for, just warmer in tone. Neither wears differently underneath; the choice comes down to how much shine you want to see day to day.

Does a gold kitchen tap tarnish over time?

PVD gold does not tarnish under normal kitchen use; the coating is bonded to the steel beneath it and stays consistent for as long as the plating itself holds. Brushed and antique brass can dull slightly with heavy-handed cleaning, particularly anything abrasive or acidic, but a soft cloth and a mild washing-up liquid keep the tone even for years.
