Modern Kitchen Taps

Clean lines, a single lever, and a shape that earns its place on the worktop. Modern taps are the largest part of this range, and the best of them are as much about proportion as plumbing.

The single lever, and why it won

One handle mixing hot and cold in one movement is simply better ergonomics, and that is why nearly every kitchen fitted in the last twenty years has one. It is quicker, it is easier with full or wet hands, and it needs a single hole in the worktop rather than two. Everything else about a modern tap follows from that starting point: with only one handle to design, the body becomes the object, and manufacturers have spent decades refining what that body looks like.

That is worth knowing when you are comparing two taps that look similar. What separates them is under the finish. A solid brass body carries weight in the hand, and a good ceramic disc cartridge keeps the lever moving smoothly for years rather than developing the stiffness or the drip that gives a cheap tap away. Neither is visible in a photograph, and both are what you are actually paying for.

Shape, and matching it to the bowl

A tall gooseneck is the signature modern silhouette, and it does real work: it clears a full kettle, a stockpot and a tall vase, and it suits a deep single bowl. A low straight spout is the quieter choice and the one to reach for under a window that opens inwards. A C-spout sits between them and gives good reach without taking over the sink.

If reach matters more than silhouette, a pull-out head hides inside a modern body better than it does anywhere else, and docks away so cleanly that nothing about the outline gives it away.

Finish is the decision people agonise over

Black has been the defining modern finish for years now, and it still looks current against composite sinks and pale worktops. Steel and brushed finishes are the quieter option and hide fingerprints better than anything else here. Chrome remains the most forgiving and the easiest to live with. Gold and warm brass push against the whole cool-toned convention, which is exactly why they work in a kitchen that has gone all-in on grey.

Charlotte M. summed up what a good one feels like once fitted: "Absolutely love our new tap! Really high quality, finished to perfection. Works beautifully."

For the opposite end of the spectrum, traditional taps bring crossheads and porcelain into the picture. The full kitchen taps range covers everything in between.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of tap is best for a modern kitchen?

A single-lever monobloc, nine times out of ten. One handle mixing both supplies, one hole in the worktop, and a spout shape chosen to suit your sink. Beyond that the decision is about proportion and finish, because a modern tap is a piece of sculpture standing on the worktop as much as it is a fitting.

What tap finishes are in fashion?

Matt black has been the defining modern finish for several years and shows no sign of fading, particularly against composite sinks and pale worktops. Brushed steel and gunmetal have grown alongside it as the quieter option. Brushed gold and warm brass are the counterweight for kitchens that want some warmth in the metal.

What spout shape should I choose?

Match it to the bowl. A tall gooseneck clears a full kettle and suits a deep single bowl, and it is the shape most associated with a modern kitchen. A low, straight spout sits neatly under a window that opens inwards. A C-spout falls between the two and gives good reach without dominating the sink.

Is matt black hard to keep clean?

Harder than chrome, though not difficult. The finish itself is durable; what shows on it are water marks and limescale, both of which are more visible against a dark matt surface than a bright one. A wipe with a soft dry cloth after use handles nearly all of it, and hard-water areas benefit most from the habit.

Do modern taps come with a pull-out spray?

Many of them do, and the pairing is natural, because a clean modern body hides a hose particularly well. The spray head docks back into the spout so nothing about the silhouette gives it away. If reach is the thing you want most, that is where to look first.

How do I know a modern tap is well made?

Weight in the hand and smoothness in the lever, mostly. A quality tap uses a solid brass body under its finish and a ceramic disc cartridge inside the lever, and both are what keep it feeling right after years of use. A tap that feels light or whose lever has play in it when new will not improve.

Should the tap match the sink or contrast with it?

Either, as long as it looks deliberate. A black tap on a black composite sink is a coherent modern pairing, and a brushed steel tap on a stainless sink is the safe classic. Deliberate contrast reads just as well, which is why a matt black tap over a white sink has become such a common choice.
