Stainless Steel Kitchen Sinks

A stainless steel sink is the default choice, and defaults get that way by earning it. It takes the boiling kettle, the hot roasting tin, the dropped pan and twenty years of washing up, and asks for a wipe in return. It is the largest part of this range for good reason.

What steel is actually good at

Heat is the first thing. Pour a pan of boiling water into a steel bowl and nothing happens, which is not something you can say of every surface in a kitchen. Nothing stains it, nothing soaks into it, and there is no glaze to chip or seal to maintain. It is light enough to fit without the base unit being built around it, which keeps installation simple and the price sensible at every level.

What steel does is mark. Over years, a fine web of small scratches builds up across the base, and that is the material behaving normally rather than failing. Brushed and satin finishes take this in their stride, since the surface already carries a directional grain for the marks to disappear into. A base grid keeps the deeper scores away, and is the most useful thing you can add to one of these sinks.

Gauge, finish and quiet

Thickness is the difference between a sink that rings and one that does not. Thin pressed steel resonates under a running tap; a heavier gauge stays much calmer, and most well-made sinks add sound-deadening pads and an anti-condensation coating underneath, which you hear as a duller, lower note rather than a clatter. Composite granite and ceramic are quieter still because their walls are thick and dense, so if silence at the sink is a priority, that is where to look.

Finish is the other lever, and it is mostly about maintenance. Brushed and satin surfaces hide fingerprints and water marks between cleans. A mirror polish looks superb on day one and shows everything on day two. Wiping along the grain rather than across it keeps a brushed surface even, and in hard-water areas an occasional descaler stops limescale dulling the shine.

Every layout, both mountings

Because steel is pressed rather than moulded or fired, it is made in more shapes than anything else here. Single bowls are the most common, with one and a half arrangements close behind and full double bowls for two proper stations. Integrated drainers are pressed from the same sheet as the bowl, so there is no seam along the join.

Both fitting routes are wide open. Inset drops the sink in from above and suits any worktop including laminate; undermount hangs it beneath a solid surface for an uninterrupted sweep, a pairing steel takes to particularly well because its rim is so slim.
