An undermount sink hangs beneath the worktop so the stone runs straight over its own cut edge and down into the bowl, and you can sweep a whole worktop clean in one pass. It is the tidiest way to fit a sink, and the one that asks the most of what it is fitted into.

What the worktop has to give you

The opening is formed by the worktop, not by the sink, which means the cut edge is on show inside it. Granite, quartz, composite stone, solid timber and solid acrylic can all be polished and sealed to take that. Laminate cannot, since its core is not meant to meet water at a cut edge, so a laminate worktop wants an inset sink whose rim covers and protects that edge instead.

That constraint is the whole decision. If the worktop is already solid stone or quartz, undermounting is usually the obvious call and costs you nothing in practicality. If it is laminate, this is not the route, however much you like the look.

Reveals, and why fitters talk about them

The reveal is how the worktop edge lines up with the bowl beneath it. A negative reveal tucks the bowl slightly under the stone, which is the most common arrangement and the easiest to wipe across. A flush reveal aligns the two exactly for a crisper line. A positive reveal leaves a strip of the sink visible around the opening. None of them changes how the sink washes, and all of them change how the finished worktop reads, so it is worth agreeing which one you want before the stone is cut.

Materials, and what they bring underneath

Stainless steel is the most common here by a wide margin, and thicker gauges with sound-deadening pads on the underside make a real difference to how quiet the bowl is under a running tap. Composite granite is naturally quieter and warmer to the touch, moulded with a thick wall that suits hanging beneath stone. Ceramic undermount sinks exist as well, heavy enough to need proper support but rewarding with a deep glazed finish.

Bowl layouts are just as open. Single bowls pair especially well with this mounting, since the uninterrupted worktop meets an uninterrupted bowl, though one and a half and double versions are widely made for it too.

The worktop carries the load rather than the sink resting on anything, which is why the fixing matters and why a heavy ceramic or composite bowl needs more support than a light steel one. It is a fitter's job rather than a weekend one.

Which is better, an undermount or a top mount sink?

Undermount gives you the cleaner worktop, with no rim to wipe around and a straight sweep from surface into bowl. Top mount, or inset, works with any worktop including laminate and gives you the wider choice of sinks.
